Theoretics, Get Familiar With February’s “Discovered” Artist

D-List Magazine - Bertie Magit

Theoretics’ aforementioned Kickstarter-funded video (Jekyll and Hyde) is a theatrically-impressive visual accompaniment indicative of the quality this group exudes and the care they put into their craft. Simply put, few hip-hop bands do it right and Theoretics are the exception….

Tonight in Seattle, Theoretics

SSG Music - Joe Gustav

What do you get when you collide hip-hop and funky jazz at a high speed? You get the captivating sounds of Theoretics. This Seattle group is composed of two Emcee/Vocalists who drop rhymes on top of a five piece rhythm sections. After one of their first performances even at The Crocodile not too long ago, they have solidified themselves in Seattle’s music scene earning comparisons to bands such as The Roots. Come to The Triple Door tonight to see this up and coming band and to learn exactly what the fuss is all about and why live hip-hop is so great.

Theoretically Speaking

All You Can Eat Hip Hop - Benny B

“There is a shortage of hip-hop bands (a la The Roots) where the creativity is constructed first through the mind of the musicians and not on a board with drum machines, computers, and mixers. A sound where the music is new, it’s organic, and you get the feeling (when you listen) that timeless hours were spent in a rehearsal spot somewhere or in someone’s basement/garage perfecting the sound and timing. Theoretics is one of those bands…..”

Theoretics live at the Crocodile

They Live- For Young Moderns

“The Theoretics were up next, and immediately won over our spirit that evening. To sum these guys up it’s simple, One cannot fully understand Northwest Hip-Hop without seeing Seattle’s own THEORETICS live! Their music is inspiring, intelligent, and funky. The Theoretics are fronted by two formidable MC’s that play well off each other, backed by a full-live band that could give the entire ROOTS Crew a run for their money. Even if Seattle is a bit North, this is still West Coast Hip-Hop featuring: highly kinetic, jazz-infused, funk n’ roll, with upbeat thoughtful lyrical content. Standout jams included Be Free, Jekyll and Hyde, the groovy rapid fire Who We Are, and Higher. FYM was stunned to discover this level of Hip-Hop in Seattle existed, and def will not miss the next time they play again in the city. More music like Theoretics needs to exist in the collective unconscious of both Hip-Hop and Rock landscapes…”

Theoretics’ Video for “Higher” Gives Seattle Band-Backed Hip-Hop a Reintroduction

Seattle Weekly- Nick Feldman

“The recent video for “Higher,” lead single from their nearly released eponymous debut record, features crisp cinematography from the ever-improving Garrett Wesley Gibbons (responsible for Victor Shade’s “Soothsayer”) and top-notch break-dancing cameos from Uykhang Brian Ung, Jessica Hu, and the homie Mikeskee, formerly of UW’s Hip-Hop Student Association and always of all things b-boy. But the highlight is the sense of passion in Chimaroke Abuachi’s voice as he belts the song’s chorus: “Go high, go high, go high, go HIGHER…..”

Folklife gets a life

The Stranger- Dave Segal

“Live hiphop still provokes skepticism among some purists of the genre, but Seattle’s Theoretics do their damnedest to quell such doubt. The seven-piece ensemble skillfully raps and sings over intricately arranged, orchestral funk. The songs exude an earnestness and positivity that may rub some the wrong way, but anyone who sympathizes with the do-gooder spirit of local hiphop acts like Macklemore or Blue Scholars will warm to Theoretics’ righteous, fist-raising compositions.”

My Philosophy

The Stranger- Larry Mizell Jr.

“K-OS is bringing his genre-busting T-Dot flavor to the Crocodile on Thursday, May 26. Opening are Theoretics, who recently released their self-titled debut. Their solid hiphop-soul-rock (a genre I’m a little wary/weary of at this point, to be real) is packed with breathless, inspirational lyrics and a feeling-it-funky sound..”
